{"id":3621,"date":"2025-06-09T20:21:37","date_gmt":"2025-06-09T19:21:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/furnessrailway.co.uk\/about\/?p=3621"},"modified":"2025-06-27T19:17:16","modified_gmt":"2025-06-27T18:17:16","slug":"monday-9th-june-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/furnessrailway.co.uk\/about\/?p=3621","title":{"rendered":"Monday, 9th June 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>A very short update this week.<br \/>Now that the cylinder liners on Great Western Railway 0-6-2T No. 5643 have<br \/>been fitted there remains the awkward job of fitting four locating plugs<br \/>which prevent the cylinder liners from twisting when the engine is in service.<br \/>Whilst the liners have an interference fit, i.e. they have been shrunk with<br \/>liquid nitrogen to slot into the cylinders, the plugs are an additional safeguard<br \/>to any unwanted movement of the liners. The rear left hand plug is seen in<br \/>place here. We will leave Keith to relate to you just how challenging a job it<br \/>was to fit them when you see him next!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1776\" src=\"https:\/\/furnessrailway.co.uk\/ciac\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250604_142150A-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"One of the locating plugs in 5643's left hand cylinder\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><br \/>A final skim bore of the insides of 5643\u2019s cylinder liners is due to take place on<br \/>Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week. The piston heads will then be<br \/>turned down to fit and new piston rings fitted.<br \/>The end of the dry sunny weather is making outdoor work on 5643\u2019s cab roof<br \/>and side tanks trickier, but Jon and Sim have continued their work, with Jon<br \/>seen below doing some preparation work on the right-hand tank.
