It is due back at Preston in the autumn. It headed south with a new smokebox for Bulleid \u2018West Country\u2019 Pacific Wadebridge which had been collected from Riley &amp; Son at Bury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/furnessrailway.co.uk\/ciac\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/20260402_160638-AT-1024x669.jpg\" alt=\"Cumbria's boiler about to depart to the Mid Hants Railway\" class=\"wp-image-2129\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>With the boiler away, it has been time to concentrate on cleaning and repairing of some of Cumbria\u2019s other components. These now look much better, having received a coat of primer. The chassis is due to depart from Preston for repair this Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/furnessrailway.co.uk\/ciac\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/20260415_114223-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Sim Lane-Dixon uses a belt sander to clean up Cumbria's running boards\" class=\"wp-image-2132\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Work has been progressing at Riley &amp; Son at Bury on the repairs to the boiler of Great Western Railway 0-6-2T locomotive No. 5643 where some cracks were found in the flange of one of the internal boiler pipes.<br>The cracks have been ground out and welded up as can be seen below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/furnessrailway.co.uk\/ciac\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG-20260416-WA000-Matt-Durkan1-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Cracks had appeared on one of 5643's boiler collection pipes\" class=\"wp-image-2134\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/furnessrailway.co.uk\/ciac\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG-20260416-WA0003-Matt-Durkan-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"The pipe after repair\" class=\"wp-image-2135\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Finally, Furness Railway locomotive No. 20 left Preston yesterday to take part in the Mid Hants Railway\u2019s Spring Steam Gala this next Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Tim and Ben will set off tomorrow in order to prepare the loco and Phil and Anne will be following them down on Thursday to staff the sales stand at Ropley.
