Work is continuing at Preston on the overhaul of Great Western Railway 0-6-2T No. 5643 where the cross heads have been refitted. Keith and Ron are seen here refitting the left-hand cylinder cover.

Meanwhile the saddletank of ‘Austerity’ 0-6-0ST Cumbria has received a second coat of Indian Red paint.

Cumbria’s chassis is at Statfold Engineering where new white metal has been added to all the eccentric straps and machined. Current work includes re-metalling the big ends. The overhaul of 5643’s boiler is in progress at the premises of Riley & Son at Bury; Cumbria’s boiler continues to receive attention at the Ropley boiler shop on the Mid-Hants Railway where all the crown stays have been removed for replacement.
